OK, so here are the most recent pictures of our little cabin. If you walk in the front door you will look into our living room:

If you walk across the room to the futon and turn around, you will see our kitchen:

If you turn your head just slightly to the left, you can see the dining area:

If you climb up the stairs and look you see our bedroom (the bed is up on a platform so that we have lots of storage underneath):

Turn your head slightly to the left and you will be in Kaia’s room (her bed is on a platform too. The rooms are seperated by a large bookshelf):

If you walk into Kaia’s room and turn around, you will see the closet and my office space, as well as the stairs (behind the bureau).

This is a picture of the outhouse we are building… Still not done yet, but our first party is tomorrow night, so it has to be done by then! Kaia wants to paint it purple with sparkles… anyone know if a good source of purple, sparkly paint?? 🙂

We had been keeping track of all our expenses on a spreadsheet to figure out how much this house has cost us, but a magnet go dropped on our computer and erased the hard drive… SO, my best guesstimate is that this hosue has cost us somewhere between $2K – 3,500 to build (depending on if you include the lost wages for Toby going to collect wood from arkansas and all that jazz.) Of course there is also the cost of the land and the road being built, but that will also be repaid to us as we sell off spots for the ‘community’ we build. Not too bad, eh?

  1. Looking good! Very cozy and homey so far. Out of curiosity, how does the sink work? I see the bucket underneath, but do you have running water from some source, or do you just pour into the sink to wash up, then let it drain out into the bucket to take outside later? And what’s your water source? I hope your party this weekend is fantastic!

  2. Wow, the cabin looks great! I give you and Toby so much credit for realizing your dreams without any hesitation! You are a wonderful role model…

  3. Kathy, the sink is just draining into a bucket for right now. We bring in water in 1 or 5 gallon jugs, pumped from the well (which needs a new pump as of last week, so we are now bringing in water from Toby’s work place.) Our plan is to get a 55 gallon water tank and put it upstairs under Kaia’s bed, then have it gravity feed to the sink.

Thanks for all the support you guys!

  6. HI there! great to chat with you last nite. glad KaiaFest went well. sorry we missed it! I was so anxious to check out progress after we chatted last nite…wow, look how far you have come in 1 month since you sent me the first picture of the house…and how very far you have come in less than ONE YEAR since leaving Chapel Thrill! I am so proud and impressed. you are truly turning your dream into reality so fast!! give Kaia xoxos from us. Hi Toby. see y’all soon. love you.

  7. Not sure if you painted yet, but I bought regular paint at home depot, and in the paint aisle they had bags of wall paint “sparkles”…a fancy name for a bag of glitter. I painted my walls yellow with the gold glitter, then sponged a lighter color over, it looks awesome especially when the sunlight hits it. I painted my livingroom bright purple, but alas, no sparkles…good luck…post a photo when youre done!!! Tia
