Suki, totally raw!

This is my sweet Suki. I got her from a dog rescue in 2001, and I realized the other day that she has been on the same brand of dog food since I got her 6 years ago! It’s supposed to be one of the healthiest dog foods, but still, to be on the same thing everyday for 6 years just seems unhealthy. (So, I’ve decided to start feeding her a raw diet. It just seems to make sense. This is what dogs would be eating in the wild. I use to have two cats that I fed a raw diet and they loved it! I don’t remember what made me switch back… convenience maybe.) Anyway, I spend ~$60 a month on dry dog food. I’ve calculated it out, and if I do some smart shopping, feeding her a meat and bones diet won’t cost any more… it may actually be cheaper. Once we are in our new house (and we have a little more kitchen room), I may contact some of our local organic/free range meat producers to see if I can get their scraps. So, for right now, I have started her on chicken necks (our local grocery stores will pack these up, along with organs, and mixed grounds, specifically for pet owners). After slowly adding other meats, I will try to (mostly) follow this menu, and spice it up as I get more use to it. So far she loves it!! Any raw feeders out there?

  1. she is such a sweet beautiful dog! i hope her nose is better.

i’d love to feed my dog and cats raw but we can’t afford it right now (plus i don’t have my act together enough to do it right now).

  2. She’s still got that bump on her nose. That’s actually what spurred me to look into raw food. Wondering if it was an allergy to something, or if her body wasn’t taking care of it for some reason…

Yeah, and speaking of having my act together… who knows why I chose now to start this raw thing??!??!?! I mean, shesh, don’t we have enough going on??? 🙂

  3. I fed my pug Lucy raw for several weeks and she loved it. then all of the sudden she refused it, It is back to the cheap stuff now for her. Dumb dog.

  4. We tried the raw diet with our 3 until our local butcher went out of business. To be honest, I haven’t put the energy into finding another source of raw food for them yet. I will soon though, because they were all quite happy!

  5. Remember dogs didn’t just eat meat in the wild. They got a variety of grains and such from eating the stomach and intestants of their prey. You must have balance so all meat is not a good diet. Look into it further it’s a great way to go but alot more work to get it right.

  6. Yeah, I was on this raw feeing list serve for a little while and all they talked about was raw meat… no veggies… no nothing else! I thought, “what about the occasional fruits they might eat in the wild, like berries? Or the stuff that’s in the stomachs of their prey.” So, I will definitely add a little veggies/fruits and carbs. I think it’s supposed to be ~10% of the final mix. Do you raw feed Anonymous?

  7. If there is any commercial trapping in your area a trapper would probably give you his skinned out critters. Here in the North, dogs that are outside a lot do well on their high protein sources.

  8. Raw food won’t help her. I gave my dog road kill and it almost killed him back. There is nothing wrong with commercial dog food, wet or dry. Don’t believe the liberal crap that tells you there is anything wrong with feeding your dogs commercial food. We have to stop sucumbag to the propiganda that is fostered on us day after day. Take care of your pets they are the only ones you have!
