Kaia broke her leg last night. My poor little one! She was at a birthday party where there was a trampoline and too many people were jumping at once. She came down as the trampoline was bouncing up, and the impact was enough to break the top of her tibia! She was in a lot of pain, but there was no swelling or color change. So I was hoping it was just a sprain. But, as the night wore on and the pain continued, we decided to take her to the ER. So, now she is in a full leg splint, from hip to toes! She was up until 5am in the ER, so I’ve got her on some pain killers now to help her get some sleep. Tomorrow, we will go to an orthopedist to get a ‘permanent’ cast put on her leg. It may be on a few weeks, it could be a month or more. We’ll know on Monday. Poor thing. She can’t move. The cast is almost half her weight… she can’t get up the stairs to her bedroom, she can’t get in or out of her car seat, she can’t get into her chair to eat a meal, she can’t go the bathroom by herself. I know that this time will fly and kids bones heal fast, but I don’t care! I wish it had been my leg! I can’t stand to see her in pain! This, on top of Suki’s surgery, not having insurance, and not having much money left to finish the house, and the whole family is feeling a bit low.
omg. i am so sorry. poor thing! i know how you feel, it would be horrible to watch your child be in so much pain. (((hugs))) to all of you. i hope she heals fast.
Oh my – sending hugs and healing vibrations to kaia and lots of love to you and hubby as you deal with everything…
Oh poor baby!
Oh, Maria, I’m so sorry. Everything seems to hit at once sometimes. Poor Kaia.
I hope Kaia is feeling better soon and that the pain starts to subside quickly. Maybe the specialist will be able to create a permanent cast that will do what it needs to do to immobilize the broken bone while also allowing her a little bit more mobility as she starts feeling up to moving around? Healing thoughts and much love to you all!
oh, poor little one. i’m so sorry. there is nothing worse than seeing our children in pain. and these things always seem to come in bundles around the holidays. i hope that she heals quickly. time for lots of mother daughter bonding & crafting activities.
Poor kiddo! Of course, they are usually much more resilient and adaptive than we adults are, so she’ll probably do just fine with the whole thing once she gets used to it. I had a 15 month old in daycare with a broken leg once and you should have seen her speeding herself around the room any old way she could!
I’m sending lots of healing and luck your way!
Contact Eblen charities to see if they can help offset some of the cost of the hospital bill. Also, have you signed Kaia up for any kind of Medicaid?
I broke my leg a few years back. Unfortunately, there was no substance on earth that the doctors could use to create a leg cast strong enough to withstand the rigors of being a superhuman. So a group of scientists in Germany got together and created a special “Uber-cast” out of metal and it held for a couple of days, but then I tore it off because the leg had healed (took 48 hours!) and I was itching like crazy. Here is a pic of the cast…

How did you pee in that thing???
As far as Medicaid. We make too much to qualify. We do have insurance, but it has a 10K deductible, so it’s pretty much pointless, unless there is a major accident or cancer or something.
Hey Maria – I hope Kaia is feeling better now – as you said, little ones heal SO fast as far as broken bones go – hopefully she’ll be out of a cast in no time. I really like the “krusalis” idea – adding it to the short list!
Maria- I’m sorry to hear about Kaia’s leg! I hope it heals fast.
As for insurance, a friend of mine switched from BCBS to another place that caters to people who are self employed. So far my friend has been super pleased with them and says he pays way less for more benefits than he did with BCBS. Not sure who you do insurance through, but just let me know if you want me to find out more info.
I’m sure things will take a turn for the better soon. 🙂 Take care.
Hi, all: Just read the news of Kaia’s broken leg! The poor girl (although, as we know, it’s usually much worse for the parents than the child). She seems to be adapting well – kids are so resilient, aren’t they! All the best as you go through this unfortunate rough patch.
I have catastrophic insurance too, and put Ella on Medicaid about a year ago. Ther eis another plan in NC called “healthy Choice” for people that make too much for Medicaid, but lack business insurance, etc. Our doctor on Carrboro alos cut us huge breaks on costs for office visits. And, tell the office/hospital manager that you want to pay what the insurance company’s pay, NOT out of pocket bills, which, ironically, are more than insurance payemnts. So so wrong! Blessedly, no growth plate involvement and kids heal so fast!
