Cock-a-doodle-do

Yesterday morning, as I was getting Kaia up for school, I thought I heard an odd sound coming from outside. We all stopped dead in our tracks and waited patiently to hear it again…. and there it was, loud and clear… ‘cock-a-doodle-do’. Now, if Crowy were still alive, we wouldn’t have thought this odd. But, since all we have is 6 hens, we were a bit surprised! I ran to the window and looked out to the chicken area to see Poodle Noodle, our little black silkie, puff up his chest, stretch his neck and crow a lovely crow. I had gotten Poodle Noodle because silkie hens are supposed to be fantastic moms…. looks like I need to get him a girlfriend 🙂

  1. How fun to have chickens! I dream about having a little chicken coup and a cow, have you heard of Dexter cows? I think they sound like the perfect small family cow. Are your chickens laying right now? Oh and thank you for the advice concerning soap making! I’m hoping to make the soap tomorrow!

  2. No eggs right now. But our oldest 3 just molted and are almost fully feathered again, so hopefully they will start soon. The younger ones haven’t started yet, but should start soon too. In the past, they have laid through the winter, just a little less productive.

I’ve heard of dexters, but never seem to absorb much info when it comes to cows. We have some dairy intolerance in our household, so I knew we could never have a cow. Goats are a possibility though, and I’d love to have some one day… probably not right now though, with a baby on the way… maybe next fall..
